Netflix, Coming Of Age and Tiredness
I decided that I am going to write every evening and call it Check Ins With Itunu as I navigate the second lockdown in the UK. Read on for today’s check in
I missed yesterday’s post of the night but to be honest I didn’t have much to say and today in some respects is the same. I binge-watched Grand Army on Netflix and have one episode left to go. Set in a high school in America the series explores the topics of sexual assault, race, sexuality etc. with the foundational theme being identity. I adore anything coming of age. I love the way coming of age narratives explore the uncomfortable process of growth and accepting oneself. There’s a lot to be learnt from coming of age narratives and irrespective of your age the stories call for introspection.
Sexual assault is such a sensitive topic and seeing its portrayal in Michaela Coel’s I May Destory You was, to me, revolutionary and necessary. I think Grand Army explores sexual assault in a way that also gets viewers thinking. Although it’s very uncomfortable to watch, the way the characters involved navigate the assault speaks to the need for lessons about consent.
I find myself a little exhausted tonight and I am basically feeling my eyes close as I write this. However, I have some ideas on mixing up some blog posts/opinion pieces/articles within these daily diary entries and look forward to exploring them.
